December Hot Topic: Saturated Fat

Saturated Fat: What does the research really say?

posted Dec 3, 2014, 8:04 AM by Karna Stuchlik

There are more clinical studies on the effects of saturated fat in the human diet than one can reasonably read in a lifetime. With so much data, much of which can be conflicting, how can anyone make an educated decision about how to healthfully include saturated fat in their diet?

As with anything, common sense prevails. Long-term epidemiological studies continue to show that diets that are high in saturated fat and low in fruits, veggies and other plant products are more likely to result in cardiovascular disease. Enjoy some saturated fat in your diet, but focus primarily on plant products and lean proteins like fish, skinless poultry and lean cuts of beef and pork.
